Safe Summer Road Trips: Answers

1. FALSE. Fatigue is a form of impairment, so don't give in to that temptation to push on. If you started early, stop early. Stop and get out of the vehicle occasionally. Breaks keep you alert by promoting blood circulation, and let the motor cool down.

2. FALSE. It is never safe to leave a child, a vulnerable person or a pet alone in a vehicle. Even on days that seem almost mild, the passenger compartment can turn into an oven in 20 minutes or less, with potentially deadly consequences.

3. TRUE. According to Transport Canada, about 40 per cent of all fatally injured vehicle occupants are unrestrained. Of these, almost half are ejected from their vehicles.

4. TRUE. Leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead, at least three seconds for each six metres (20 ft.) of vehicle length. A car six metres long pulling a six metre trailer should have at least six seconds following distance in ideal conditions.

5. TRUE. With outdoor terraces, festivals and golf, people consume more alcohol in public places in the summer. In addition, barbecues and vacation activities often mean a drink or two. If you’ve been drinking never take the wheel, whether it’s a car, boat, ATV, motorcycle, or bicycle
