Candle Quiz Answers

1. False. Canada-wide, 500 fires were caused by taper candles in 2000, resulting in five fatalities. Alberta reports that between 1990 and 1999 candle fires doubled. Ontario reports a 47 percent increase in candle fires from 1995 to 2001.

2. False.  The leading factor in candle fires is leaving the candle unattended, followed by having it too close to combustible materials. The third most frequent cause is children playing with candles.

3. False. See above. Put out all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.

4. True. Over 40 percent of candle-related fires start in the bedroom.

5. True. During December more candle fires start in the family room or dining room, many of them when decorations are ignited.
