ABS Quiz Answers

1) ABS allows the driver to steer the vehicle while applying maximum braking.

True. If you require steering while braking, the 100 per cent of traction that the tire can generate will be divided between both tasks.

2) With ABS if you feel your brake pulsating, pump the brake.

False. With ABS, apply steady and constant pressure; do not pump the brake. As the ABS engages, you may feel the brake pedal pulsating. This is caused by the system applying and releasing pressure to the brakes.

3) The stopping distance is shorter with ABS than conventional brakes.

False. When braking on dry or wet roads your stopping distance will be about the same as with conventional brakes. Allow a longer stopping distance with ABS when driving on gravel, slush and snow.

4) ABS helps you maintain control of your vehicle when maximum braking is required.

True. ABS was designed to help drivers maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking. It offers greater vehicle stability in an emergency.

5) On front-wheel drive cars, ABS works on the front wheels only.

False. ABS in cars and most multi-purpose passenger vehicles works on all four wheels. In many pick-up trucks it works only on the rear wheels, although some are available with ABS on all four wheels.
