Cut a Rug without the Rug!

About 47 percent of seniors’ falls occur in the home and many falls can be prevented. You can lower your chances of falling by making your home safer.  Here are some tips:

  • Remove small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep the rugs from slipping.
  • Remove things you can trip over (such as papers, books, clothes, and shoes) from stairs and places where you walk.
  • Have handrails and grab bars where you need them (i.e. tubs, toilets, staircases).
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors.
  • Improve the lighting in your home both inside and outside.
  • Wear shoes that give good support and have thin non-slip soles.

A little effort now, may prevent a lot of pain and suffering later.  Take the time today to create a safe environment in your home and then dance a jig!
