After 18 years at the helm of Canada’s leading safety organization, I plan to retire early in 2007.
Much progress has been made in safety over my tenure. That said, Canada still has far too many preventable deaths and injuries, and new challenges continue to emerge.
In 1988, my first year at the Canada Safety Council, 4,153 people died on Canadian roads. Recently released data for 2004 report 2,730 road fatalities a drop of 34 percent despite a 25 percent increase in licensed drivers.
Thousands of lives have been saved, thanks to governments, manufacturers, engineers, police and safety organizations working together... and safety-conscious Canadian drivers. CSC has played a very active role to achieve this progress.
On topics ranging from impaired driving to television tipovers, CSC provides reliable safety information to the Canadian public. Our programs reach Canadians of all ages. Behind the scenes, we work on numerous initiatives that have led to impressive safety improvements.
The Council’s capable, committed staff have enabled it to become a well-respected and well- known voice and resource for safety in this country. Thanks to their expertise, we have successfully engaged citizens, legislators and the media in discussion of important public policy issues. I expect this team will continue its good work long after my departure.
