National Police Award for Traffic Safety and Transport Canada Director General’s Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award

An award ceremony to recognize outstanding efforts in the field of traffic safety is taking place on Sunday, August 19th 2007, at 5:00 p.m. at the Imperial Ballroom, Hyatt Regency Hotel in Calgary , Alberta during the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference.

The National Police Award for Traffic Safety recognizes excellence, dedication and initiative in the field of traffic safety by enforcement officers across Canada . Through the partnership of Transport Canada , the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and Canada Safety Council, this award serves to identify and commend active enforcement personnel for their work to improve traffic safety and to encourage others to implement new initiatives or publicize those in which they are already involved. The award is specific to an outstanding achievement completed or reaching a significant milestone within the 2006 calendar year. Best practices collected through the award process are shared broadly with Canada 's police community.

Nominations for the Road Safety LIfetime Achievement Award have been received annually on behalf of those that have dedicated their career to road safety. Recognizing that no forum for lifetime contributions existed, Transport Canada 's Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate led the creation of an award where such contributions could be recognized. Transport Canada Director General's Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes members of the Canadian policing community that have made significant outstanding lifetime contributions to traffic safety.

The recipient of this year’s National Police Award is Agent Charles Doré.  His initiative “Sécurisons nos routes” made Québec roads safer by reducing the number of collisions, fatalities and potentially dangerous situations.  He accomplished this by addressing road safety issues of the farming industry and other motorists using rural roads.  Another project also led to advising the agriculture community on safer more suitable equipment, able to respect the traffic code.

The Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Staff Sergeant André Lemaire.  Over a span of 30 years of service in both the field and at the RCMP National Headquarters, he has shown dedication to traffic safety.  He has played a prominent role in many initiatives and has accomplished advancement and improvement in public safety.
