Call for Gun Amnesty Program
The Canada Safety Council, in light of the tragic shootings in Mayerthorpe, Alberta has asked the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) to announce a gun amnesty program, at an appropriate time but in the very near future. This request was made to CACP president Chief Edgar MacLeod. in a letter from Canada Safety Council President Emile Therien.
Mr. Therien contends gun amnesty programs have been successful in many communities in reducing the number of firearms in the hands of citizens.
The Canada Safety Council considers gun control critical to crime prevention, mental health and injury prevention and says education is needed to counter the culture of violence and reduce the primary demand.
