2004 National Police Award for Traffic Safety

Officers Awarded for Traffic Safety Achievements

The National Police Award for Traffic Safety recognizes officers who go beyond the call of duty to keep road users safe. It is a joint initiative of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canada Safety Council and Transport Canada.

The top award for the 2004 National Police Award for Traffic Safety went to the Toronto Police Service for the development and delivery of the “Guaranteed Arrival” Program. The winning initiative was developed to address an increase in police vehicle collisions and became part of the service’s overall Collision Reduction Program.

An Honourable Mention Award was presented to two officers from the RCMP “K” Division Traffic Services Edmonton, Alberta. Constable Greg Srogen and Constable Bruce Reinbold of the RCMP “K” Division, Traffic Services developed public safety-centred problem-solving as the template for the delivery of traffic services in provinces where the RCMP provide policing services. This initiative combines education, awareness and enforcement in changing driver behaviour in Canada’s roadways.

For most front line police officers, protecting the public is more than just a job. That is certainly the case for the 2004 Winner of the Director General’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Road Safety. Sergeant Norm Shaw of the Ontario Provincial Police, Central Region Traffic Unit was recognised for his outstanding dedication to safety on Canadian roadways throughout his 34-year policing career.
